Thou Shalt Not Tempt Me

Sen. Joseph Lieberman spoke at the Hagee "summit" yesterday, as Think Progress notes:

Lieberman again drew a parallel between Hagee and biblical figures, this time saying biblical heroes, unlike the demigods of Greek mythology, "are humans — great humans, but with human failings." Lieberman said that Moses had his shortcomings, too.

"Dear friends, I can only imagine what the bloggers of today would have had to say about Moses and Miriam."

Funny you should ask:

Markos Moulitsas: "He promised us snakes would lead to our liberation.  Well, Pharaoh's still in charge.  We need More and Better Hebrews!"

Atrios:  "Moses said we'd be out of Egypt after one plague.  We're already Nine Plague Units into this with no end in sight."

Mike Stark: "I am going to go to Pharaoh's house with a big roll of papyrus to confront him about his former slaves."

Chris Bowers: "The last three polls all say that Pharaoh's vulnerable, so I believe Moses can take a more aggressive stand.  Praise Joshua and let him know."

FDL: "Take a look at these stones Miriam just inscribed for us that detail her journey -- it's not getting enough attention.  She'll be here to answer questions in our Tablet Club after sunrise on Sunday."

Howie Klein: "I'm already running pro-Aaron hieroglyphs in Moses' camp."

Matt Stoller: "If Moses doesn't beseech Hashem to deliver us something other than manna to eat, he should be primaried."

Big Tent Democrat: "Jethro has too much influence over Moses' judicial appointments."

McCain Flips Out When Asked About Relevance Of Military Record

by Todd Beeton [courtesy of MyDD]

Well, this never would have happened had General Clark not persisted in his remarks about whether John McCain's military experience qualifies him to be president. Today, on his "Straight Talk Express" plane, a reporter actually asked McCain how his experience qualifies him to be president and McCain turned visibly angry in response (man, I wish there was video, but I suspect we'd have seen it by now...)

From ABC News's Political Radar:

McCain bristled at the comments on "Face the Nation" last weekend by an Obama supporter, retired general Wesley Clark, who belittled the relevance of McCain's wartime experience as a qualification for the Presidency.

"I think it's up to Sen. Obama now not only to repudiate him but to cut him loose," McCain said.

McCain became visibly angry when I asked him to explain how his Vietnam experience prepared him for the Presidency.

"Please," he said, recoiling back in his seat in distaste at the very question.

"Puhh-leeeease." Sorry, Senator, not off limits any longer.

Oh, and here comes the obligatory rescue from his wingmen...

McCain allies Sen. Lindsey Graham stepped in to rescue him. Graham expressed admiration for McCain's stance on the treatment of detainees in US custody.

"That to me is a classic example of how his military experience helped him shape public policy in a way no other senator could have done,'' Graham said.

Sen. Joseph Lieberman, also traveling on the trip, expressed admiration for McCain's wartime service as well.

CT: "Lieberman On The Ticket Doesn't Help Republicans"

by DemFromCT [courtesy of Daily Kos]

Okay, I really like the headline. What can I say? From the CT-based Q poll:

June 26-29 +/- 2 (March)

McCain 35 (35)
Obama  56 (52)

Sen. Obama leads Sen. McCain 86 - 9 percent among Democrats and 52 - 36 percent among independent voters, while trailing 79 - 16 percent among Republicans, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. The Democrat is ahead;

  • 53 - 40 percent among men
  • 59 - 31 percent among women
  • 53 - 40 percent among white voters
  • 90 - 2 percent among black voters
  • 68 - 26 percent among voters 18 to 34 years old
  • 54 - 38 percent among voters 35 to 54 years old
  • 53 - 38 percent among voters over 55

Divided Dems? Nah.
Obama problem with white voters? Not in CT.
Obama problem with women? Not here.
Lieberman useless for McCain in the place he's best known? Yep.

If McCain picks Sen. Joseph Lieberman as his running mate, only 14 percent of Connecticut voters say they are more likely to vote Republican, while 32 percent are less likely and 52 percent say it won't affect their vote.

Now, as it happens, Lieberman is a really unpopular choice with most Republicans, let alone at home. And McCain would really rather have Tom Ridge (but can't pick a pro-choice running mate because for McCain it's all about character politics.)

Here's another nugget:

Connecticut voters disapprove 78 - 19 percent of the job President George W. Bush is doing. Only 14 percent are "very satisfied" or "somewhat satisfied" with the way things are going in the U.S. today, while 85 percent are "somewhat dissatisfied" or "very dissatisfied."

Low Joe

by Josh Orton [courtesy of MyDD]

The residents of the great state of Connecticut seem less than thrilled that their Senator, Joe Lieberman (Connecticut for Lieberman - I) has taken to touring the country in support of George Bush's third term. According to a new Quinnipiac University poll (6/26-29, n=2,515, MoE +/-2%):

Sen. Joseph Lieberman gets a 45 - 43 percent approval, down from 52 - 35 percent March 27 and his lowest score ever.

"Sen. Lieberman's approval rating has dropped below 50 percent for the first time in 14 years of polling, with nearly two-thirds of Democrats giving him low marks, probably because he is campaigning for Sen. John McCain," Dr. Schwartz said.

This includes 62% disapproval among Democrats in the state. As Markos pointed out last fall, Joe wouldn't have a shit at a rematch with Lamont. Fool me once, and whatnot.
